Last Sunday, I went with my wife and a couple of friends to a Jacob Collier concert.
I’ve been following him on YouTube and Instagram for a while now, initially because of his perfect pitch abilities, but later because I consider him one of the musical geniuses of our time, so having him include Costa Rica in his Latin American tour was exciting news.
On top of that, the concert here was with an orchestra, the Orquesta Filarmónica de CR, famous for its extensive list of popular music covers, from Bob Marley to Taylor Swift, to Metallica, to name a few.

Here are the concert highlights:
- Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, but one of the violins was his voice
- A very mellow version of the traditional folk song Wild Mountain Thyme. This was a highlight for me because I’ve been playing this song on both the concertina and the guitar.
- Improv with the orchestra. How often can you see a flautist or cello player improvising? Jacob came up with an arrangement on the spot for every musician, and after 30 minutes or so, the result was amazing. The improv ended up mixing with “Bitter Sweet Symphony” with him on the piano.
- And finally, a mashup version of the Costa Rican song “Soy Tico” with “Somebody To Love” by Queen. Simply amazing:
From his own repertoire, he played Little Blue which was perfectly delightful to listen to:
