Last weekend, we received some heartbreaking news—our dog Pantu went blind. About two weeks ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes, and although he’s on insulin, he experienced a blood sugar spike from Friday to Saturday, which permanently affected his vision.
We’re very sad but hopeful that he will adapt. Although he’s 10 years old, he has spent most of his life in the same house, so he navigates well between rooms and the kitchen, though he struggles a bit in the yard. Seeing him bump into chairs, walls, or toys is heartbreaking, but he seems to be in good spirits—just a little more attached to Glori and me.
I was shocked to learn how quickly vision loss can happen. I expected a slower process, not something that would occur overnight.
A quick Google search revealed:
Diabetes-induced cataracts can develop remarkably quickly and can cause a complete loss of vision in less than 48 hours.
I also read that once a dog is diagnosed with diabetes, 75% of them tend to lose their sight within the next year.
