Trip to Volcán Turrialba

Back in 2016, Turrialba Volcano made headlines in Costa Rica with some of its most intense activity in years.

9 years ago Turrialba had one of its biggest eruptions in recent history, sending ash clouds over 4km into the sky. The wind carried the ash all the way to San José and beyond, coating cars, streets, and even people with a fine gray dust.

The worst part however wasn’t the ashfall in the cities, but what happened near the crater. The intense heat and constant explosions caused large sections of the surrounding forest to burn, leaving behind a blackened, lifeless landscape.

Plants and trees were wiped out, and wildlife had to flee to survive. Farmers in the area also suffered, as pastures were covered in ash, making it impossible for cattle to graze.

There used to be a small house here.

The views from the volcano were also stunning, and you could actually see the Irazú volcano to the west.

I can normally see the Irazú but from the other side.
