Family Hike in La Chimba

It’s been raining cats and dogs in Costa Rica for the past few months. It’s been a few years since we got a rainy season this heavy.

So we had been waiting for a sunny Sunday to go out of the city and breathe some fresh air. Last Sunday we got an opportunity and we took it.

We picked Hacienda La Chimba, which we hadn’t visited before. I had seen multiple pictures of people in the famous “Mantra Hand” and the website looked like a nice place. It’s also on one of the warmest parts of San José.

The place is pretty much a huge coffee farm, and offers a variety of activities: zipline, climbing wall, high strings between trees, coffee tour. We went with the 5km hike.

After they gave us instructions and showed us the map, they asked us to pick a wood cane and said it was going to take between 2 and 2.5 hours. We did it in 3, but the huge win was that no kid required a lift.

I gotta be honest, I’m really proud of the kids. This was not an easy hike. I knew 5km was going to be a challenge, but the terrain was very steep at times (either up or down), and the place was extremely humid due to the rains of the past few days.

Still, they not only finished it but also really enjoyed the whole hike. I can only wait to take them to more serious hikes in the future… I’m already thinking about the Andes and Patagonia.

After the hike, we had a delicious lunch at the place’s restaurant. I went with a chifrijo, Glori picked a chicken wrap, and the kids had the usual: hamburger and chicken nuggets. And for dessert, homemade gelato for all.

I’m looking forward to the dry season to start, it feels like they are all at an age where we can start exploring the country in more adventurous ways.
